Ever since the creation of the ESRB, (Entertainment Software Rating Board), in 1994 there have been many positive reviews from parents, psychologists, senators, etc. Some parents and review boards have called it the best rating system in the U.S.
The ESRB is a non-profit, self-regulatory organization that is the first to implement a video game ratings system based on age and content. The ESRB was created to be better than the rating systems in the past because of the needs of both parents and child experts to have age-appropriate ratings and the descriptors of the content that go with that rating.
Today, the ESRB is adopted and enforced by virtually the whole gaming industry. In order to enforce the ESRB ratings into their games, the game developers and companies must follow the ESRB's rules and guidelines; this includes advertising and marketing.
The ESRB currently has seven ratings in total. To the right are the rating symbols and their age level. Have you ever wondered about the rating of a certain game and its content descriptors? Then check out this cool ESRB Rating Search Widget. If you're curious about which game your child wants or the games that you already own then type in the name of the game and find out more.
